Start with the reason you need STEP: a study programme, scholarship or job may require its result. Your target institution’s requirements and your deadline should shape preparation, rather than a generic promise of a particular score.
Check the requirement first
Find the institution’s published score requirement and submission deadline, if specified. Requirements can differ between programmes. Use ETEC for official exam information and registration, and the receiving institution for its admission requirements.
Establish a useful baseline
Complete a varied practice diagnostic without looking at explanations while answering. Then identify patterns: understanding a passage, following spoken details or interpreting a grammatical structure. A practice diagnostic guides study; it is not an official exam result.
Choose focused practice
Select two skills for the first week. Give each a short practice session followed by a review. If listening details are the problem, simply doing more grammar questions will not address it. Write down why you chose an answer before opening the explanation.
Measure understanding, not volume
For every error, record one rule or observation you can apply to a new question. Repeating a memorised item may improve recall without showing that the underlying skill has improved.
Your first three actions
- Confirm your target requirement and deadline.
- Complete and review a practice diagnostic.
- Schedule realistic sessions for your two priority skills.
